Grants of up to $5,000 to Canada PhD and MD students, medical residents, clinical fellows, and post-doctoral fellows to offset expenses related to a cancer research presentation at a convention, conference, or meeting. Funding is intended to support candidates who are traveling to attend a conference for the purpose of presenting data (paper or poster presentation) from a cancer-related project on a first-author or presenter basis.

Eligible expenses include: 

  1. Conference registration fees; 
  2. Accommodations; and 
  3. Transportation

It is anticipated that up to 5 Travel Awards will be awarded in this competition.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants will not exceed $5,000.

Term of Contract:

The expense claim must be made within 3 months of the conference date to be eligible for reimbursement.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be either a:
- Registered student in a PhD or MD/PhD program
- Post-doctoral fellow (within 5 years of attaining their PhD)
- Medical resident/clinical fellow

At the time of the conference, PhD, MD, MD/PhD students must be registered at an eligible Canadian host institution.

Trainee positions must be undertaken at an eligible Canadian institution.

It is not a requirement that the research supervisor or department head be supported by a Canadian Cancer Society research grant.

Pre-Application Information:

Deadline for application and reference letter submissions: 5:00 pm EST August 8, 2022.
Applicants will be notified of results before the end of August.

Individuals may receive this award only once per stage of training (PhD, MD, Post-doctoral fellow).

A Notification of Award will be issued to the award recipient indicating the maximum amount of travel expenses approved. Travel awards are paid on a reimbursement basis.

It is understood that applications may also be made to other agencies to provide support for travel similar to those submitted to the Canadian Cancer Society. Applicants are required to declare other sources of funds in the budget section.
